The Kinect sensor is actually a combination of an RGB camera, Depth sensor as well as a Multi-Array microphone that is integrated in to a sleek designed horizontal bar that provides full body motion capture for controlling selected Xbox 360 games.

Why do I require Microsoft's new sensor?

reason you require the new sensor from Microsoft is for the health benefits it delivers to you and your relatives. People are always going to play video games (there is no going back now), so don't let your relatives and friends sit on the couch and possibly develope metacarpal tunnel syndrome from repeatedly using traditional controllers, get up and be active, interact with full body motion control, get in the game and live healthier while having fun simultaneously.

When combining the Kinect sensor with Microsoft's Xbox Live you will have the ability to "video chat" with up to four friends or relatives members, all at time without the necessity for headsets (provided everyone has the Kinect sensor), as the multi-array microphone, depth sensor and RGB camera will enhance your chat session in a more natural fashion and surroundings.
